Medical Bill Relief Grant Application

We are not currently accepting new applications. We will reopen in August 2024.

We are sorry that you’re here. Whether you’ve just found out that you are unlikely to be able to have biological children or you’ve recently lost a child, we know that navigating this new normal can feel impossible and overwhelming. Our desire is that our grants can be a very small source of relief for you as you press forward in your grief.

Our application is currently closed. We will be accepting new applications in August 2024. If you meet the eligibility requirements listed here, and you’d like to be notified when applications open, please email Elisabeth Herrin at elisabeth@outoftheashes5k.com and we will reach out in advance of the opening date. Grants are given on a first-come-first-serve basis, while funds last.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. You are a resident of North or South Carolina. If funds allow, those outside of Carolinas will be considered. You may still submit an application.
  2. You have an official medical bill that shows patient responsibility after insurance has been applied. Services performed need to be shown as they relate to pregnancy loss (prenatal, D/C or D/E), infant loss (including NICU stay) or any infertility discovery appointments (consultations, testing, labs, ultrasounds, etc.). At this time, we do not cover expenses for fertility treatments. You may need to request an itemized bill from your healthcare provider or fertility clinic to get this type of bill.
  3. Medical bill is dated, noting services performed within the last 12 months.

FAQ

  1. What if I haven’t received my final bill yet?
You may have received an estimate from your insurance company of what you might owe. However, we have to have a final bill showing patient responsibility after insurance has paid their portion. Once you receive your final bill, return to this application. If it comes after the current application window as has closed, you can wait until our next quarter’s opening. We cover bills for any services in the past 12 months.
  2. What if my bill is due before a decision is made?
We encourage our families to call the healthcare system and ask for an extension or set up a payment plan with the lowest payment possible. If selected for one of our grants, we will reimburse you for any payments made after your application was submitted.
  3. Does this grant cover fertility treatments?
Our grants cover the discovery testing of infertility, including the initial consultation, male and female testing, ultrasounds and labs. We do not cover fertility treatments such as medication, IUI, IVF or costs associated with Snowflake Adoption.
